PSHE
Curriculum Intent
At Coupals Primary Academy, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE)
education enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible
members of society. Through PSHE, pupils learn about relationships, health,
wellbeing, rights and responsibilities, preparing them for life in an increasingly
diverse and complex world. We encourage children to develop confidence,
resilience and self-worth, while making a positive contribution to both school and
the wider community.
We believe PSHE is a vital part of primary education and is taught weekly,
alongside assemblies and wider curriculum experiences. Discussion and oracy are
central to lessons, giving pupils opportunities to explore ideas, ask questions and
develop their understanding of themselves and others.
Intent
At Coupals Primary Academy, our intent is to provide a broad, ambitious and
inclusive PSHE curriculum that equips all pupils with the knowledge, skills and
attitudes needed to thrive in modern Britain. Through our curriculum, children
develop an understanding of relationships, health, safety, wellbeing and
citizenship, whilst learning how to make informed decisions and keep themselves
safe. Safeguarding is embedded throughout the curriculum, supporting pupils to
understand risk, recognise unsafe situations and seek help when needed.
PSHE is taught through the CUSP PSHE curriculum. Developed using evidence-informed frameworks, CUSP PSHE is built around six core ideas that are studied
simultaneously across all year groups, allowing learning to be connected across the whole school and built upon progressively over time.
Each year, children study the following six core ideas:
- Ready to Learn
- Friends and Family
- My Life
- Respectful Relationships
- Being Safe
- Keeping Healthy
Our whole-school ethos, values, assemblies and enrichment opportunities further
strengthen and enrich our PSHE offer.
Implementation
PSHE underpins our school values and vision and plays a key role in preparing
pupils for life beyond primary school. British Values, respectful relationships and
personal responsibility are woven throughout the curriculum and wider school life.
Pupils are encouraged to take on leadership roles and make meaningful
contributions to the school community.
Through CUSP PSHE, pupils revisit key concepts over time within a coherent and
cumulative curriculum. Lessons are designed around explicit vocabulary
instruction, discussion, reflection and application, enabling pupils to develop both
knowledge and essential life skills. Learning is adapted to meet the needs of
individual classes and remains responsive to local and contextual safeguarding
priorities.
The PSHE subject leader supports high-quality teaching through monitoring,
professional development and regular discussions with pupils and staff.
Impact
The intended impact of our PSHE curriculum is that pupils leave Place Farm as
confident, respectful and responsible individuals who understand how to keep
themselves safe, maintain healthy relationships and contribute positively to
society.
We evaluate the impact of our curriculum through:
- Comparison of achievement against intended outcomes;
- Pupil discussions and reflection on learning;
- Retrieval and revisiting of key concepts;
- Teacher observations of knowledge, language and behaviour;
- Evidence from floor books, class displays and practical activities.
